NSWC Crane co-hosts annual Electromagnetic Warfare Conference for experts across Services
July 17, 2023 — “This event brings together military, government labs, industry, and academia in a question and answer format to discuss strategic focus for FLEW,” said Patrick Flannagan, a Customer Advocate at NSWC Crane and the Conference Chair this year for the Association of Old Crows (AOC) Electromagnetic Warfare Capability Gaps and Enabling Technologies Conference. “It’s a really awesome opportunity to generate and share ideas, build partnerships, and strengthen professional relationships for the benefit of the warfighter. NSWC Crane employee awarded for notable contributions during the Inspector General Inspection
July 11, 2023 — Michael Wallace was awarded the Department of the Navy Civilian Service Commendation Medal for his work as the Assistant Lead for the Inspector General (IG) Inspection Preparation. After receiving this award, Wallace credits his team—many of whom he has not worked with before—to a successful inspection. “Leading the NSWC Crane IG Inspection effort was a lot of work, but the most fulfilling work I’ve ever done. I think that was because I worked with a team of approximately 50 fellow employees who made it a great experience. I met so many great people that I hadn’t previously worked with and learned about some of the different things they do to make our command successful. This experience proved to me that we have the best team here at Crane and our people make it the best place to work,” stated Wallace... MORE

Michael Wallace was awarded the Department of the Navy (DON) Civilian Service Commendation Medal, which is the fourth highest civilian award, for his work as the Assistant Lead for the IG Inspection Preparation. In this role Wallace assisted with the development of an overall IG Plan of Action and Milestones, assembled a team to conduct mock inspections, provided regular updates to NSWC Crane’s Commanding Officer and Technical Director, and documented best practices for future inspections.

NSWC Crane SMART Scholar steps up to support prototype development team
July 10, 2023 — Elliott Yu, an Engineer and SMART Scholar at NSWC Crane, served as Point of Contact (POC) for the Energy Magazine Prototype team in the Power and Energy Systems Division. Originally, Yu was assigned to shadow and assist the main POC/test engineer for the project–but when this person had to take leave, Yu was tasked with taking over the position. After receiving his degree from Purdue University in Electrical Engineering Yu began his career at NSWC Crane through the Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation also known as the SMART Scholar program which is a program through the DOD that provides scholarships for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, or STEM, students. ... June 29, 2023 — A Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (NSWC Crane) employee was awarded the Military Sensing Symposia (MSS) Goodell-Pollock Memorial Award for Dedicated Service with his work in the Infrared (IR) Countermeasure (CM) Community. Mark Anderson received this prestigious award at this year’s Military Sensing Symposia Electro-Optical (E-O)/Infrared Countermeasure Symposium. This conference brings together experts in the field to discuss and review new technology that is being developed for American aircraft. June 8, 2023 — An NSWC Crane employee was awarded for her noteworthy contribution to the United States Navy. Maureen Sims-Strong was awarded the Navy Civilian Service Achievement Medal, which is the fifth highest Navy civilian award, due to her role as the Contracting Officer Representative (COR) Certification Manager (CCM). Sims-Strong has credited much of her success to the positive work environment that Crane provides. “Crane has been so much more than a job or career. June 1, 2023 — An NSWC Crane employee is a member of a multi-agency team that was recognized by the Federal Laboratory Consortium (FLC) during its 2023 National Meeting in Cleveland, Ohio on March 28-30. Members from Sandia National Laboratories, Army Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office, Strategic Systems Programs, and Naval Sea System Program received FLC’s 2023 Interagency Partnership Award for advancing hypersonics technology. Patrick Shaffer, Distinguished Engineer for Hypersonics at NSWC Crane, provided initial team direction and conceived technology transfer workshops held in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Shaffer said it is an honor to be a member of the team that was recognized for this critical effort. “It was a pleasure to work with an immensely talented and dedicated group of people that successfully transitioned a prototype design to a product that was buildable by industry,” he said. ... NSWC Crane leads Office of Naval Research effort to enhance electro-optics, infrared technology at sea
May 30, 2023 — NSWC Crane hosted a milestone workshop for a new program dedicated to improved maritime electro-optic and infrared (EO/IR) technology. The workshop hosted about 40 participants from across industry, government, and several federally-funded laboratories meeting in-person for the first time in Bloomington, Indiana and at NSWC Crane on May 10-11. The Office of Naval Research (ONR) program, a new Future Naval Capability (FNC) called Multi-SpecTral High Resolution Imaging and Targeting Sensor (MUST-HITS), addresses research challenges and opportunities in high resolution imaging and integration technology areas. NSWC Crane leads and is contributing expertise to this science and technology (S&T) effort which aims to rapidly enhance advanced maritime EO/IR technology in order to improve visibility of a wide variety of targets at once. Dr. Benjamin Conley, the Senior Scientist and Technology Manager (SSTM) for EO/IR sensing, is also the ONR Program Officer for this effort. “It was great having the entire MUST-HITS team together in the same room,” said Dr. Conley. “With MUST-HITS, we are aiming to improve warfighter visibility and situational awareness for long-range and real-time targeting at sea. The program will do this through an unprecedented infrared resolution sensor using a digital back-end to see multiple items at the same time at range. MUST-HITS also will provide baseline capability for upgrades in the future without major hardware and sensor replacements due to the digital nature of the sensor.”... MORE

NSWC Crane first in NAVSEA to pass international safety certification
May 22, 2023 — NSWC Crane) is the first organization in the NAVSEA enterprise to pass an international safety management system (SMS) certification after five years of preparation. The certification is called the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), Standard for Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S), or short for ISO 45001. ISO developed ISO 45001 for organizations to improve employee safety, reduce workplace risks, and create better and safer working conditions. “Passing this certification means that NSWC Crane is set up for success to ensure the safety of our workforce,” said CAPT Duncan McKay, the Commanding Officer at NSWC Crane. “The team worked for years to ensure we were prepared for the certification; this is a testament to their work ethic and dedication to creating a safer environment for our workforce.”...
