NSWC Crane celebrates 2023 NISE science and technology in annual End of Year Showcase

By Sarah K. Oh, NSWC Crane Corporate Communications

Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (NSWC Crane) hosted its annual Naval Innovative Science and Engineering (NISE) End of Year Showcase on September 26-28 at the High Velocity Innovation Center (HiVe). The HiVe is an innovation laboratory at NSWC Crane. More than 150 people attended the event which included briefs and poster sessions from 84 Fiscal Year 2023 (FY23) NISE Principal Investigators.

The NISE program is one of the largest internal funding sources available for scientists and engineers (S&Es), fostering creativity to further the latest science and technology (S&T). Each year, S&Es submit proposals to the NISE program. Dozens of projects are awarded funding based on the Department of Defense and U.S. Navy’s mission to develop and strengthen research and development.

Brant Ackerman, Director of the NISE Program at NSWC Crane, says the showcase displayed the innovation taking place at NSWC Crane.

“It was fantastic to see the great work that took place in FY23,” says Ackerman. “The NISE program provides a way for our subject matter experts to do innovative basic and applied research, transition technologies into operational use, develop the workforce, recruit and retain highly skilled S&Es, and purchase state-of-the-art labs and equipment. The NISE End of Year Showcase provides other employees and leadership the opportunity to learn more about these crucial efforts to enhance the Department’s S&T mission.”

The showcase featured projects from across NSWC Crane’s technology areas including Electromagnetic Warfare, Trusted Microelectronics, Unmanned vehicles, and Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning as well as many others. The Principal Investigators were from all mission areas, included of some new employees, and included subject matter experts who have been supporting NSWC Crane for years.
