Major benefits of fiber optic cables include little interference to the electromagnetic field, dependability and high bandwidth that can handle high volume data transmissions. A team at Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division in the Fiber Optics Engineering and Operations Branch serves as the Navy’s Fiber Optic In-Service Engineering Agent.

Michael Wallace was awarded the Department of the Navy (DON) Civilian Service Commendation Medal, which is the fourth highest civilian award, for his work as the Assistant Lead for the IG Inspection Preparation. In this role Wallace assisted with the development of an overall IG Plan of Action and Milestones, assembled a team to conduct mock inspections, provided regular updates to NSWC Crane’s Commanding Officer and Technical Director, and documented best practices for future inspections.
