NSWC Dahlgren Division Personnel Awarded for Achievements Vital to Current and Future Fleet

DAHLGREN, Va. (May 17, 2017) - Kathleen Jones holds a framed certificate moments after receiving the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) Annual Honor Awards ceremony. Jones was recognized for outstanding, significant, and substantial technical contributions to the Navy in Radar Systems. "Ms. Jones has demonstrated exemplary leadership in expanding her Division's portfolio and developing technically sound leaders to tackle current and future Naval radar challenges," according to the citation, adding that she, "established a culture where mentoring, collaboration, and teambuilding are the norm for developing innovative solutions to novel challenges introduced through the ever-evolving threat." Rep. Wittman to Navy Scientists and Engineers: Make Ideas Operational in the Fleet - Rapidly

DAHLGREN, Va. (April 25, 2017) - Rep. Rob Wittman, R-Va., tells Navy scientists and engineers that their innovative ideas - and ability to get new technologies and systems operational in the Fleet quickly - will be leveraged to the nation’s advantage. “Keep the ideas coming and let’s find a way to get them to the Fleet faster,” said Wittman who chairs the Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee of the House Armed Services Committee. “We can bring innovation creation in a faster manner to our men and women out there in the front lines, and we can do things less expensively.” More than two dozen speakers, including the congressman, spoke at the conference on Mission Engineering & Analysis, and Integration & Interoperability, sponsored by the American Society of Naval Engineers and Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division. NEEC Students Tour NSWC Dahlgren Division

DAHLGREN, Va. (April 26, 2017) - Roger Campbell, a Navy lethality engineer, explains the Laser Lethality and Development lab capabilities to undergraduate and graduate students touring Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) during the annual Naval Engineering Education Consortium (NEEC) meeting. The students are looking through a 16" optic lens - part of the NSWCDD Laser Technology and Analysis Branch laboratory's optics layout - used for evaluating laser effectiveness against various materials.

Navy Scientists Use World War II Era Test Tunnel to Develop High Energy Laser Weapons for Fleet

DAHLGREN, Va. - Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) scientists Chris Von Hohenleiten and Emily Martin prepare for a laser lethality test by ensuring the optics are aligned correctly. The laser experts aligned the optics in the Navy's Laser Lethality and Development Laboratory which features an above-ground tunnel used for evaluating high energy laser weapon systems. The tunnel - crucial to gun range operations during World War II - was recently transformed into a vital new capability for testing laser technologies, NSWCDD officials announced April 21.
NSWCDD Engineer Wins NAVSEA Women Moving Forward Award

DAHLGREN, Va. – Navy engineer Karen Wingeart is the 2016 Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) Women Moving Forward Award winner. NAVSEA Commander Vice Adm. Thomas Moore announced Wingeart as the award winner in an April 2, 2017 communiqué to NAVSEA employees based at Navy warfare centers and shipyards across the country. The Women Moving Forward award recognizes the contributions of individuals who promote equal opportunity in the workforce and continually make significant positive impacts to the command's mission and readiness. As a government civilian, Wingeart serves as a systems engineer and technical program lead for Cooperative Engagement Capability integration on Ship Self Defense System platforms and DDG-1000. She recently retired after a 20-year career on the Navy’s military side – 11 years on active duty and nine years in the reserves – as a surface warfare officer and a meteorology and oceanography officer.

WASHINGTON (Feb. 11, 2017) - Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Commander Rear Adm. Tom Druggan presents the Black Engineer of the Year (BEYA) Community Service Award to Dwayne Nelson, NSWC Dahlgren Division engineer, at the 31st annual BEYA gala. "This award has inspired and challenged me to contribute more towards empowering our youth and others to serve our community while encouraging interest in highly-rewarding science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields," said Nelson. "Giving back and empowering people to reach their full potential is vital to stimulating enthusiasm about STEM.
