Navy Mentors Get Middle School Students Excited about STEM and Internship Programs

KING GEORGE. Va. (June 28, 2017) - Middle school students use remote-controlled models to solve simulated naval robotic missions at the 2017 Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division sponsored STEM Summer Academy, held June 26-30. Camp activities included ten robotic challenges; building a water rocket and determining the optimal fuel loading to maximize height; exploring epidemiology; building and destructively testing a tower from balsa wood with the goal of maximizing the strength to weight ratio; predicting the number of each color of M&Ms in a large bag after compiling statistics on numbers in smaller bags; and building a boat out of foil and straws with the aim of maximizing its cargo carrying capacity.

(June 15, 2017) - Navy scientist Charles Miller and mathematician Jessica Hildebrand perform pre-flight checks on the SCAPEGOAT chemical, biological, and radiological (CBR) detection system. The SCAPEGOAT system - developed by a team of Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division junior scientists and engineers - demonstrates the capability to deploy a modular CBR sensor system aboard multiple unmanned aerial vehicle platforms.

Weekes spoke to the troop about his Navy career and world-wide travels, citing examples of the importance of being prepared and looking out for shipmates, fellow scouts, and teammates in any situation, to include hiking and camping expeditions.

(May 17, 2017) - Kathleen Jones holds a framed certificate moments after receiving the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) Annual Honor Awards ceremony. Jones was recognized for outstanding, significant, and substantial technical contributions to the Navy in Radar Systems. "Ms. Jones has demonstrated exemplary leadership in expanding her Division's portfolio and developing technically sound leaders to tackle current and future Naval radar challenges," according to the citation, adding that she, "established a culture where mentoring, collaboration, and teambuilding are the norm for developing innovative solutions to novel challenges introduced through the ever-evolving threat." Rep. Wittman to Navy Scientists and Engineers: Make Ideas Operational in the Fleet - Rapidly

Rob Wittman, R-Va., tells Navy scientists and engineers that their innovative ideas - and ability to get new technologies and systems operational in the Fleet quickly - will be leveraged to the nation’s advantage. “Keep the ideas coming and let’s find a way to get them to the Fleet faster,” said Wittman who chairs the Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee of the House Armed Services Committee. “We can bring innovation creation in a faster manner to our men and women out there in the front lines, and we can do things less expensively.” More than two dozen speakers, including the congressman, spoke at the conference on Mission Engineering & Analysis, and Integration & Interoperability, sponsored by the American Society of Naval Engineers and Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division.
