USS John P. Murtha (LPD 26) Completes Builder's Trials

GULF OF MEXICO - The Navy's future amphibious transport dock, John P. Murtha (LPD 26) successfully completed Builder's Trials March 4. The principal mission of LPD 17 San Antonio class ships is to deploy combat and support elements of Marine Expeditionary Units and Brigades. With the capability of transporting and debarking air cushion or conventional landing craft and augmented by helicopters or MV-22 vertical take-off and landing aircraft, these ships support amphibious assault, special operations, and expeditionary warfare missions. PASCAGOULA, Miss. - The future USS Portland (LPD 27) was successfully launched at the Huntington Ingalls Industries shipyard Feb 13. The ship was transferred from the land level facility to the drydock, which was then flooded allowing her to float off the blocks. LPD 17 class ships are versatile players in maritime security with the ability to support a variety of amphibious assault, special operations or expeditionary warfare missions. 150721-N-EW716-001 (July 21, 2015) PASCAGOULA, Miss. - Mrs. Ima Black, widow of the first Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy, Delbert Black, begins the mechanized process of cutting the steel plate with the help of Paul Bosarge, Huntington Ingalls Industries burner/work leader.  Mrs. Black is the sponsor for the destroyer DDG 119 -- the future USS Delbert D. Black -- which formally started fabrication in Ingalls' Pascagoula, Miss., shipyard today.
