NSWC Philadelphia Division Leads General Equipment Inventory Management Process Improvements

200213-N-YH772-0008 Naval Surface Warfare Center, Philadelphia Division (NSWCPD) recently developed the Inventory Sheet Automation process, which utilizes a Navy Marine Corps Intranet (NMCI) tablet and scanner to electronically complete the requisite inventory sheets. The use of a barcode scanner to automate the input of inventory management data reduces inventory time by 60 percent while also reducing risk of human error. Casey Plew, NSWCDD commanding officer, hold the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) they signed at a ceremony held at the UMW Dahlgren campus, Jan. 31. Looking on are Dr. Nina Mikhalevsky, the university’s provost, and Darren Barnes, NSWCDD acting technical director, who also signed the MOU which enables NSWCDD employees who qualify for the program to earn a project management certificate while applying the credits towards a Master of Business Administration. “We are excited at the University of Mary Washington about this partnership and program,” said Paino. “This program really aligns with our mission and vision moving forward. IMAGE: DAHLGREN, Va. (Jan. 14, 2020) – U.S. Navy civilian cyber engineer Jay Blalock won the Copernicus Award, the Chief of Naval Operations announced in a message, Jan. 14. Blalock is recognized for his impact on the Navy's cyber security testing capability while leading cybersecurity systems engineering efforts to architect a safe cyber test environment for the Navy. “I am extremely humbled, and honored to have been nominated and selected to receive this award,” said Blalock, program manager and cyber test engineer for a distributed cyber test architecture called USS Secure at Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD). “This award is the result of the hard work of a large group of people that are dedicated to ensuring the safety of the fleet through cyber testing and hardening.” (U.S. Navy photo/Released)

Small Business Runway Extension Act Takes Effect – Good News for Small Business and NSWC Dahlgren Division

A Small Business Administration final rule to implement the 2018 Small Business Runway Extension Act effective on Jan. 6, 2020 is good news for Dahlgren, according to Parker. The law increased the period of measuring small businesses’ annual revenue from three to five years in the contract evaluation process. “This change to five years is a logical move, as it helps account for the cyclical nature of contract awards,” he said. “It should really help increase our potential small business base.”  (U.S. Navy photo/Released)

NSWC Dahlgren Distinguished Community Service Award Winner Recounts Impact of Her High School Mentor

IMAGE: DAHLGREN, Va. – Navy human factors engineer Chelsey Lawson credits the impact of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) on her life to a Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) engineer – her high school calculus tutor – by the name of Leonard Wilson who retired in 2019 after 36 years of government service. “I went to college and earned a degree in biomedical engineering because his mentoring had a huge impact on my life,” said Lawson, who won the 2019 NSWCDD Distinguished Community Service Award.  “I participated in STEM activities in our surrounding community to guide and inspire students on how to combine their interests with STEM education and careers – like Mr. Wilson did for me.” (U.S. Navy photo/Released)
