Kilian (left), the commander of Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command Pacific/Director, Fleet Civil Engineer, U.S. Pacific Fleet, briefs Brendan Owens, the assistant secretary of defense for energy, installations, and environment (ASD EI&E) and Paul D. Cramer, the principal deputy of ASD EI&E, during their visit to Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PHNSY & IMF), Feb. 1, 2023. During the visit, Owens and Cramer met with senior leadership from PHNSY & IMF to assess progress on the Navy’s Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program and tour the shipyard’s dry dock areas that will be modernized beginning in 2023. The first modernization action proposes to construct and operate a new graving dry dock and waterfront production facility to support current and future classes of the nation’s nuclear-powered submarines.

Improvement Processes Reduce Materials Backlog for Deck Plate Workers at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard

The Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PHNSY & IMF) made strides, recently, in improving and streamlining a receipt inspection process when maintenance parts arrive at the shipyard. The effort was part of Naval Sea Systems Command’s Naval Sustainment System – Shipyards (NSS-SY) program that began in 2019 as a pilot program designed to remove barriers to productivity. The process improvement was related to a backlog in receipt inspection process that had affected the timely distribution of material and parts to ships undergoing maintenance availabilities. JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR HICKAM, Hawaii (February 27, 2022)- Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro looks at the proposed Dry Dock 5 site at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility. The Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program will support future Virginia-class submarine maintenance and optimize work across the shipyard.
