American Indian Civil War General Honored at Dahlgren’s Dual Observance

Godfrey "Gus" Weekes, Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) commanding officer, presents a plaque to Juanita Mullen - Veterans Administration’s Liaison for American Indian and Alaska Native Veterans - at the NSWCDD sponsored National American Indian Heritage and Veterans-Military Families Month Observance. “Indians have fought for the U.S. armed forces at a higher rate per capita than any other racial group in the country,” said Mullen. “For many, military service was an economic opportunity in a world that threw up racial barriers to gainful employment for people of color. Surface Warfare Experts Innovate for Future Fleet at New Navy I-Lab

Jesse Wilson, Naval Surface Force Atlantic commander, emphasizes the importance of innovating to the strategic environment as he spoke to a group of civilian technologists and military officers at the first in a series of Surface Warfare Innovation Workshops held at the Navy's newest Innovation Lab. Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) and the Navy War College co-sponsored the event that encouraged NSWCDD scientists and engineers to throw away the rule book as they brainstormed to solve future warfighting scenarios. "The workshop enabled Navy leadership to share current and future Fleet concerns with our new and mid-career personnel to develop united, focused, and creative solutions," said NSWCDD I-Lab Director of Innovation Nelson Mills.

Navy History & Heritage Leader Recounts WWII Heroism of Native American Navy Commander

Ernest Evans, at Combat Direction Systems Activity Dam Neck. The presentation was in honor of National American Indian Heritage Month. Evans was half-Cherokee and one-quarter Creek Indian and commanded USS Johnston (DD 557) in the Battle off Samar in World War II.

Dahlgren Navy Base Starts Centennial Countdown

It was the first of a series of events and activities scheduled over the next year to celebrate the significant role Dahlgren has played in bolstering the nation’s defense. Weekes is the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) commanding officer; Fiore is the NSWCDD technical director; Colvard was the NSWCDD technical director from 1973 to 1980; and O’Leary is the NSA South Potomac commanding officer.

(Sept. 28, 2017) - Hispanic Heritage Observance keynote speaker Lance Carrington encourages his audience to pray for the residents of Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria devastated the island, and to pray for those living in Texas, the Gulf Coast, and Florida who are recovering from Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. Carrington – retired from the Senior Executive Service (SES) as a special agent for NASA and the U.S. Postal Service – recounted his life and career which included service in the Army as a reserve chief warrant officer. He retired from the Army reserves on Oct. 1, 2017 after more than 35 years of active duty, National Guard, and reserve service. He is currently executive director of the Catholic Diocese of Arlington’s Guadalupe Free Clinic in Colonial Beach, Va. The clinic serves the indigent and medically-uninsured population in Westmoreland County and Colonial Beach, on the Northern Neck of Virginia.

NSWC Dahlgren Takes Ask, Share and Learn to Heart at 2017 LGBT Pride Month Event

DAHLGREN, Va. (July 7, 2017) - Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) Commanding Officer Capt. Godfrey 'Gus' Weekes speaks to military, government civilian, and defense contractors at the NSWCDD-sponsored 2017 Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month Observance. “LGBT Pride Month affirms our commitment to increase awareness, mutual respect, and understanding of all members of our workforce," said Weekes. "Let’s take the theme 'Ask, Share and Learn' to heart and embrace knowing more about our colleagues and celebrating our collective diversity.” Established by Presidential Proclamation in 2000, LGBT Pride Month is held annually and recognizes the importance of diversity within our society as well as the many achievements of LGBT individuals.
