Junior Navy Technologists Create Autonomous Swarm Capability for Warfighters

Godfrey ‘Gus’ Weekes holds the USS Arlington (LPD-24) coin that was presented to NSWCDD Sly Fox Mission 23 team members while they were deployed aboard the Arlington for a week via the Scientists, Engineers and Logisticians to Sea program sponsored by NSWCDD Dam Neck Activity and NSWCDD. While at sea, the seven-member Mission 23 team presented the NSWCDD coin to Arlington’s commanding officer, who in turn, presented his warship’s coin to the Dahlgren junior scientists and engineers. Royal Australian Navy Delegation Visits NSWC Dahlgren Division in the Wake of RIMPAC 2018

(Aug. 16, 2018) – Dr. Chris Lloyd, High Energy Laser Lethality Lead at Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD), briefs Royal Australian Navy (RAN) Commodore Peter Leavy and his delegation at the NSWCDD Laser Lethality Lab during the RAN delegation's NSWCDD visit. Lloyd explained the importance of rigorous modeling and laboratory testing against target materials to ensure high energy laser systems are built that meet the requirements of the warfighter once fielded. NSWCDD is drawing on its knowledge of electromagnetic launchers, hypervelocity projectiles, and directed energy weapons, in addition to its established core capabilities in complex warfare systems development and integration to incorporate electric weapons technology into existing and future fighting forces and platforms. New Supervisors Propel Toward Success at NAVSEA Warfare Centers

“Loud booms” inspire intern’s dream career path

IMAGE: DAHLGREN, Va. (July 10, 2018) - Sarah Wessel and her mentor, Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division engineer Matt Henning, examine the Advanced Beam Control Locating and Engaging - Enhanced Tracking System (ABLE-ETS) gimbal. The ABLE ETS Gimbal is part of a pointing and image tracking system. Last summer, Wessel converted the gimbal's pointing controller Simulink code into C++ code. ABLE-ETS is a Joint Technology Office funded test bed for maturing directed energy and high-energy laser technologies, including tracking, sensors, and lasers. 

Wessel is interning at Dahlgren through the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) Student Employment Program (SSEP). The program provides direct hire authority for undergraduate and graduate degree seeking students enrolled in STEM majors. The program was established to provide interns with exposure to public service, enhance educational experience, and possibly provide financial aid to support educational goals. Additionally, this program will provide a streamlined and accelerated hiring process to compete successfully with private industry for high-quality scientific, technical, engineering, or mathematics students for filling scientific and engineering positions.

Top Navy Combat Control and Directed Energy Leaders Recognized at NAVSEA Ceremony

As the Navy's Distinguished Engineer for Directed Energy, Peterkin is responsible for assessing directed energy efforts across the Navy, technology development, and warfighting applications and for providing strategic direction in the development of directed energy capabilities. Peterkin is the driving technical force behind the Navy Laser Family of Systems which will result in the fielding of lasers onto surface ships.

(June 28, 2018) - Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) Chief Innovation Officer Nelson Mills demonstrates the Bluescape collaboration software for James Geurts, Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research for Development and Acquisition, during his tour of the NSWCDD Innovation Lab (iLab). NSWCDD Commanding Officer Capt. Godfrey 'Gus' Weekes looks on as Mills explains how the virtual workspace allows for real-time cloud-based collaboration. Virtualization and directed energy were among the briefs NSWCDD scientists and engineers presented to Geurts who also observed a laser demonstration. As the Navy's acquisition executive, Geurts has oversight of an annual budget in excess of $60 billion and is responsible for equipping and supporting Sailors and Marines with the best platforms, systems and technology as they operate around the globe in defense of the nation.
