New Supervisors Propel Toward Success at NAVSEA Warfare Centers

“Loud booms” inspire intern’s dream career path

IMAGE: DAHLGREN, Va. (July 10, 2018) - Sarah Wessel and her mentor, Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division engineer Matt Henning, examine the Advanced Beam Control Locating and Engaging - Enhanced Tracking System (ABLE-ETS) gimbal. The ABLE ETS Gimbal is part of a pointing and image tracking system. Last summer, Wessel converted the gimbal's pointing controller Simulink code into C++ code. ABLE-ETS is a Joint Technology Office funded test bed for maturing directed energy and high-energy laser technologies, including tracking, sensors, and lasers. Wessel is interning at Dahlgren through the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) Student Employment Program (SSEP). The program provides direct hire authority for undergraduate and graduate degree seeking students enrolled in STEM majors. The program was established to provide interns with exposure to public service, enhance educational experience, and possibly provide financial aid to support educational goals. Additionally, this program will provide a streamlined and accelerated hiring process to compete successfully with private industry for high-quality scientific, technical, engineering, or mathematics students for filling scientific and engineering positions.

Top Navy Combat Control and Directed Energy Leaders Recognized at NAVSEA Ceremony

Thomas Moore, commander of Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), and James Smerchansky, NAVSEA Executive Director, presented the Scientific and Professional Executive Award to NSWCDD engineer Dr. Frank Peterkin at a NAVSEA headquarters ceremony, June 18. As the Navy's Distinguished Engineer for Directed Energy, Peterkin is responsible for assessing directed energy efforts across the Navy, technology development, and warfighting applications and for providing strategic direction in the development of directed energy capabilities. Peterkin is the driving technical force behind the Navy Laser Family of Systems which will result in the fielding of lasers onto surface ships.

(June 28, 2018) - Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) Chief Innovation Officer Nelson Mills demonstrates the Bluescape collaboration software for James Geurts, Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research for Development and Acquisition, during his tour of the NSWCDD Innovation Lab (iLab). NSWCDD Commanding Officer Capt. Godfrey 'Gus' Weekes looks on as Mills explains how the virtual workspace allows for real-time cloud-based collaboration. Virtualization and directed energy were among the briefs NSWCDD scientists and engineers presented to Geurts who also observed a laser demonstration. As the Navy's acquisition executive, Geurts has oversight of an annual budget in excess of $60 billion and is responsible for equipping and supporting Sailors and Marines with the best platforms, systems and technology as they operate around the globe in defense of the nation.
NSWCDD Biomedical Engineer Teams Up with High School STEM Champion to Mentor Students - 'Fun Twist on Math'

IMAGE: KING GEORGE, Va. - A local student explores the fact that all living organisms have DNA by extracting it from strawberries. He was among 14 students (and 12 parents) from Potomac Elementary School, King George Elementary School, and home schools participating in a Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) sponsored science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) event at the Dahlgren Heritage Museum, May 12. NSWCDD biomedical engineer Chelsey Lawson and Nathan Sullins, a high school junior STEM champion, mentored the second to sixth grade students who learned that strawberries have eight genome copies in every cell, making it easier to see the mass when it's extracted using dish detergent and isopropyl alcohol. "We take a fun twist on math by learning about statistics using starbursts," said Jon Dachos, HSI Surface Combat System Lead and STEM mentor who coordinated the event. "The students categorized and graphed the contents of their candy samples and we discussed other ways that statistics are useful. Finally, the students practiced principles of physics and civil engineering by building the tallest tower they could out of dry spaghetti and mini marshmallows. In order to engage students in different STEM careers, a poster is displayed that shows potential career paths based on their STEM interests."

The Economic and Intellectual Impact of Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division

(May 16, 2018) – The Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) Economic and Intellectual Impact for fiscal year 2017 is outlined in the 'NSWCDD Impact' infographic released today by the NSWCDD Economic Impact Working Group. This year's study examined the organization’s influences on the local economy, state and county revenues, as well as academic and intellectual life and progress. Moreover, it analyzed how the command’s role as a Working Capital Fund Activity influences its operations, products, and services, and by extension – its customers, sponsors and the wider community.
