Top Navy Combat Control and Directed Energy Leaders Recognized at NAVSEA Ceremony

IMAGE: Vice Adm. Thomas Moore, commander of Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), and James Smerchansky, NAVSEA Executive Director, presented the Scientific and Professional Executive Award to NSWCDD engineer Dr. Frank Peterkin at a NAVSEA headquarters ceremony, June 18. 

As the Navy's Distinguished Engineer for Directed Energy, Peterkin is responsible for assessing directed energy efforts across the Navy, technology development, and warfighting applications and for providing strategic direction in the development of directed energy capabilities. Peterkin is the driving technical force behind the Navy Laser Family of Systems which will result in the fielding of lasers onto surface ships.

Local STEM Teams Advance to State Tournament in First Lego League Competition

STEM students, parents and NSWC Crane volunteer coaches participated and volunteered at a FIRST Lego League (FLL) competition on Nov. 18 at the Lawrence County Boys and Girls Club as 130 students competed for a chance to move on to the State Tournament scheduled for Dec. 2 at the University of Southern Indiana.

US Navy Divers Keep Students Safe at Carderock During International Human-Powered Submarine Races

Sailors assigned to Navy Experimental Diving Unit (NEDU) stand by to assist in the David Taylor Model Basin during the 14th International Human-Powered Submarine Races (ISR) at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division in West Bethesda, Md., June 28, 2017. NEDU and supporting dive-qualified Sailors in the National Capital Region are helping ensure a safe competition between the students at Carderock racing human-powered submersibles they designed and built for the biennial event, which is sponsored by the Foundation for Underwater Research and Education and is considered the capstone event for science, technology, engineering and mathematics outreach at Carderock.

Navy Scientists Develop Prototype for Diver Life Support

The prototype, as displayed on this mannequin is a new, semi-closed system.
