PHNSY & IMF completes USS Missouri work five days early, second consecutive VA-class submarine completed early

PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii (May 10, 2020) – USS Missouri (SSN 780), a Virginia-class fast-attack submarine, departs Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility piers to begin sea trials on May 10. Missouri's routine maintenance and modernization work was completed five days ahead of schedule after successful sea trials and certification. The submarine's recent availability required 2.2 million work-hours to complete more than 20,000 jobs that will ensure the ship remains fully operational for its planned 33-year service life.

USS Mississippi docks in preparation for availability, Shipyard open for business

The Virginia-class submarine USS Mississippi (SSN 782) docks in Dry Dock #1 on May 19 ahead of its extended dry-docking selected restricted availability. USS Mississippi's motto is Virtute et Armis ("By Valor and Arms") and is homeported in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

James F. Geurts, assistant secretary of the Navy for research, development and acquisition, looks into Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility’s Dry Dock #3. In Fiscal Year 2022 once the last Los Angeles-class submarine availability is complete, the shipyard’s Dry Dock #3 will become obsolete due to its size. To maintain and grow PHNSY & IMF’s nuclear maintenance capacity and provide best value to taxpayers, the Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program will optimize this critical shipyard location.

Hollywood actor Patrick Wilson tours Station Hypo with U.S. PACFLT Director of Intelligence and Information Operations Capt. Tony Butera and PHNSY&IMF Executive Officer Cmdr. Scott Shea. Wilson plays Edwin Layton, an intelligence officer who worked at Pearl Harbor –including at Station Hypo– during World War II, in the upcoming movie Midway.
