(Sept. 20, 2019) – One of 7,000 fifth-graders from Chesapeake and Virginia Beach elementary schools touches a static electricity demonstration causing her hair to standup at Naval Air Station Oceana’s fourth annual Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Lab. The event broke the Guinness World Record for the largest field trip on record. More than 30 scientists and engineers from Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) Dam Neck Activity and NSWCDD volunteered their time and talents to educate the students through hands-on STEM displays. More than 200 Sailors and guests attended a traditional Change of Command ceremony at Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana’s Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit’s ceremonial hangar aboard NAS Oceana June 27 where Hoffman was relieved of command by Oravec. Oravec became the command’s 28th commanding officer.

NSWCDD has won many awards over the years for exceptional small business performance. Chris Davidson, Royal Australian Navy, and CWO4 Junior Johnson, USN (Ret.), represented the command at the ANZAC Day dawn ceremony at the Gen. Douglas MacArthur Memorial. Behind the contingent are the flags of the United States, Australia and New Zealand, with a 'battlefield cross' and wreaths to commemorate the fallen at right.
