NSWC Crane, Purdue University sign Educational Partnership Agreement Amendment to Advance Partnership

By NSWC Crane Corporate Communications

Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (NSWC Crane) and Purdue University signed an Educational Partnership Agreement (EPA) Amendment on Feb. 21 in Crane, Indiana. The purpose of this agreement is to ease and encourage collaboration between the two entities.

An EPA is a Technology Transfer agreement between a defense laboratory and an educational institution to encourage and enhance study in scientific disciplines at all levels of education.

“At no point in NSWC Crane’s 82 year history has there been greater collaboration with Purdue University; today our collaborations cover the full breadth of NSWC Crane’s mission areas: Strategic Missions, Electronic Warfare and Expeditionary Warfare,” said Dr. Kyle Werner (SSTM), NSWC Crane Deputy Technical Director. “It is our aim to further expand this strategic partnership in support of emerging technologies central to our National Defense Strategy.”

This EPA aligns with the Department of Defense (DoD STEM) mission to “inspire, cultivate, and develop exceptional STEM talent through a continuum of opportunities to enrich our current and future DoD workforce poised to tackle evolving defense technological challenges.”

Purdue can benefit from the staff expertise, research opportunities, unique facilities, and equipment related to academic disciplines available at NSWC Crane.

“Purdue and NSWC Crane are building an enduring partnership focused on national security,” said Dr. Karen Plaut, Executive Vice President for Research at Purdue.  “This educational partnership agreement enables us to work together in new ways and mobilizes the strengths of both NSWC Crane and Purdue for the national good.”

Some specific functions under the EPA include: NSWC Crane designating a liaison to Purdue to collaborate specifically on National Security Innovation Network (NSIN) opportunities, NSWC Crane personnel can teach science courses or assist in the development of courses and materials, and NSWC Crane can involve Purdue faculty and students in its research projects.

“The amendment of the EPA empowers us to work together in new ways, allowing Purdue University increased awareness of DoD challenges and enabling us to share resources to enhance student and faculty opportunities through NSWC Crane and NSIN,” said Glenn Berger, NSWC Crane’s Purdue Liaison. “Through this agreement, we’re able to leverage the goodness of both organizations to help us each achieve our organizational goals.”

NSWC Crane and Purdue’s partnership is robust and longstanding. NSWC Crane currently has five active Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs), one EPA and one Partnership Intermediary Agreement (PIA) with Purdue.  Also, three Purdue professors currently act as temporary faculty at NSWC Crane, and NSWC Crane is a Purdue Cyber Apprenticeship provider.
