BREMERTON, Wash. –
Commissioned in 1961, USS Long Beach (CGN 9), a guided missile cruiser, was the first nuclear-powered surface ship in the U.S. Navy. Ex-Long Beach was decommissioned in 1995 and is currently moored at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility awaiting final disposition. The National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) is the official list of the Nation’s historic places worthy of preservation. Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (NHPA), the NRHP is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect America’s historic and archeological resources. The Navy conducted a Naval Vessel Historical Evaluation to assess eligibility of ex-Long Beach for listing in the NRHP and determined the ship to be ineligible. The evaluation can be found at the link below. The public commenting period for this determination is now open.
Public comments are collected during the Section 106 process of NHPA to ensure informed decision making by the U.S. Navy and provide transparency with the public. Comments can be submitted via email to usn.shipdisposal.outreach@us.navy.mil and will be accepted through June 7, 2026, at 5 p.m. (PDT).
