The EOD Chief received the Purple Heart Medal and a Bronze Star Medal with Valor after he was severely injured by a land mine in Afghanistan. He received rehabilitation treatment at Bethesda Walter Reed Medical Center where he persevered and was able to walk again in 31 days, returning to work within three months. He fought to remain on active duty status and is preparing for another deployment.

USS Dahlgren - An Integrated Naval Fire-Control-Loop Laboratory Environment

A Scan Eagle unmanned aerial vehicle launches from the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) Potomac River Test Range during a surface warfare integration test featuring the virtual USS Dahlgren. Scan Eagle identified, targeted, engaged and supported reengagement throughout the experiment as the NSWCDD-patented Visual Automatic Scoring System sent gun targeting corrections to the MK160 gun weapon system operator. "USS Dahlgren is empowering our integration of unmanned air and surface vehicles into the fire-control-loop for greatly expanded battle space and increased reaction times," said Neil Baron, NSWCDD distinguished scientist for combat control.

Navy Scientists and Engineers Increase Awareness of NSWCDD Technical Capabilities at Navy Yard Event

NSWCDD engineer Helmer Flores demonstrates how a shipboard Collective Protection System (CPS) filter housing works while briefing Rear Adm. Brian Antonio, program executive officer for the Littoral Combat Ships program, on the system and its capabilities. NSWCDD CBR Defense engineers designed the shipboard collective protection system to protect Sailors, critical operations, and equipment within selected areas of a ship, or zones, from CBR contamination when the ship is operating in a contaminated environment. Personnel in the protected zone do not need to wear protective clothing or masks which impose heat stress and can impact crew members' performance.
