Navy Lays Keel of Future USS Tulsa (LCS 16)

MOBILE, Alabama (Jan. 11, 2016) A welder authenticates the keel by welding the initials of the ship's sponsor, former mayor of Tulsa, Oklahoma Mrs. Kathy Taylor, onto the keel plate of the U.S. Navy's sixteenth littoral combat ship, the future USS Tulsa (LCS 16). PASCAGOULA, Miss. - The future USS RALPH JOHNSON (DDG 114) was launched at the Huntington Ingalls Industries shipyard Dec. 12. The ship, a Flight IIA destroyer, will be equipped with Aegis Baseline 9 which incorporates Integrated Air and Missile Defense and enhanced Ballistic Missile Defense capabilities. Navy Civilian Engineer Named FEYA Award Agency Winner for Delivering Warfare Capabilities to the Fleet

Ponce is equipped with the Laser Weapon System (LaWS), a technology demonstrator built by Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD). LaWS can be directed onto targets from the radar track obtained from an MK 15 Phalanx Close-In Weapon System or other targeting sources. NSWCDD engineer Alan Tolley - the chief engineer of all surface Navy radars, including radars used by LaWS aboard the Ponce - was selected as a National Society of Professional Engineers' (NSPE) 2015 Federal Engineer of the Year Award (FEYA) Agency winner, NSWCDD announced Dec. 10. Tolley was commended for his key role in delivering vital warfare capabilities to the Fleet. The FEYA is selected by a panel of judges established by National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) professional engineers in government who consider engineering achievements, education, continuing education, professional/technical society activities, NSPE membership, awards and honors, and civic and humanitarian activities.
