Carderock Answers Call to Protect Marine Life with Newly-Commissioned Ballast Water Research Laboratory

Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division  Commanding Officer Capt. Mark Vandroff (right) and Technical Director Dr. Joseph (Tim) Arcano officially open the Ballast Water Research Lab in West Bethesda, Md., Dec. 5, 2016. This new facility provides the Navy with the capability to research, develop, test and evaluate solutions to eliminate or remove aquatic nuisance species from residual water and sedimentation that remain inside ships’ ballast tanks. SERMC Adds New Capability

Seaman Marcell Rainey flushes the U-bend heat exchanger into a pre-staged hazardous waste disposal drum while descaling a marine heat exchanger at Southeast Regional Maintenance Center (SERMC) Nov. 16th. The solution is neutralized with soda ash or baking soda to neutralize the acid.

NSWC Dahlgren Division Honors Scientist for Research on ‘Peculiar’ Quantum Mechanical Energy

DAHLGREN, Va. – Navy scientists Dr. Dan Parks, left, and Dr. Jeffrey Solka are pictured with a poster explaining weak energy thermodynamics that Parks presented at a November 2016 poster session featuring Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) In-house Laboratory Independent Research (ILIR) projects. Solka, the NSWCDD ILIR and Independent Applied Research Program Director, presented Parks with the command’s ILIR Excellence Award for his research over the course of ten years on weak energy and its properties at the event. Potential military applications of weak energy includes new energetics and explosives as well as significant impact to high performance engines and the storage of power for warfighters deployed to dangerous and remote regions.
