NSWC Dahlgren Division STEM Mentors Inspire Youth at Annual Summer Academy

(June 26, 2019) – A middle school student prepares for an aerospace engineering rocketry activity at the 2019 Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) Summer Academy, held June 24-28. She was among 70 middle school students who constructed and calibrated their water rockets while discovering the optimal amount of fuel (water) to launch a ball the highest. The STEM Summer ‘campers’ worked in teams to organize and analyze their data in order to determine what fuel volume will result in the highest launch.

NSWC Crane engineer leverages resources to conduct deep learning research

A Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (NSWC Crane) employee recently completed artificial intelligence research to enhance Electronic Warfare (EW) capabilities. David Emerson, an engineer at NSWC Crane, recently defended his research that uses deep learning to process images and determine distances between objects in a scene.

Navy and local academia host STEM Summer Camp

Dan Flisek, physicist at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division teaches Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Summer Camp students about how chemistry relates to local water samples affected by last year’s Category 5 Hurricane Michael. Flisek revealed to students, with a water-quality report, pollutants found in local water reservoirs from the storm’s aftermath.

Submarine Races (ISR) in its 3,200-foot David Taylor Model Basin in West Bethesda, Md., June 24-28.  The biennial science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) event provides an avenue for high school and college teams to tackle the difficult challenges of submarine design, construction and operation.
