NSWC Crane SMART Scholar steps up to support prototype development team

By Emily Gray, NSWC Crane Corporate Communications

CRANE, Ind. – A Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (NSWC Crane) engineer steps up to support prototype development team and their work in Energy Magazine Prototype (EM-P), which is a power system component that allows for a faster recharge in a battery.

Elliott Yu, an Engineer and SMART Scholar at NSWC Crane, served as Point of Contact (POC) for the EM-P team. Originally, Yu was assigned to shadow and assist the main POC/test engineer for the project–but when this person had to take leave, Yu was tasked with taking over the position. Yu took over the role within months of starting at NSWC Crane and his responsibilities included serving as a project representative, contractor contact, coordinator for scheduling purposes, test engineer, and report writer.

Yu credits a lot of the success of this work to his team, and stated it would be “absolutely impossible” without their support.

“This team, and Crane in general, has been incredibly generous and supportive in their development and encouragement of a new engineer, and frankly all success and quality is the result of the team—their technical expertise, professionalism, work ethic, and kindness—not of myself,” said Yu.

Yu began his career through the Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation also known as the SMART Scholar program which is a program through the DOD that provides scholarships for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, or STEM, students. Each student is provided full tuition, stipends, internships, and employment after graduation and it was through this program that Yu became aware of Crane and its role in engineering work for the military. This is what untimely led him to pick Crane as his SMART Sponsoring Facility after receiving his Bachelors of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University.

Since 2006 NSWC Crane has had 54 SMART Scholars complete the program.
