USS Ronald Reagan Successfully Completes Sixth Forward-deployed SRA

By SRF-JRMC Corporate Communications

YOKOSUKA, Japan – Ship Repair Facility and Japan Regional Maintenance Center (SRF-JRMC) completed the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan’s (CVN 76) four-month-long selected restricted availability (SRA) under budget on May 13, 2021.

The carrier project team managed the planning and execution of over 97,000 man-days of maintenance, modernization and repairs on board Ronald Reagan. Major work included upgrades to the refrigeration, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems; overhauls of the catapults, jet blast deflectors, arresting gear engines; and replacements of hanger bay and flight deck non-skid, radars and antennas.

“The successful completion and certification is the result of the continued efforts of our multi-national workforce and collaborative support from Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (PSNS), CVN 76 Ships Force, Fleet Logistics Center Yokosuka, NAVFAC Far East, Carrier and Field Service Unit (CAFSU), stateside alteration installation teams and local contractors,” said Capt. Neil Sexton, SRF-JRMC commanding officer. “Because of everyone’s joint cooperation, we were able to deliver USS Ronald Reagan on time back to the fleet for operations in the Indo-Pacific region.”

Repair work was successfully conducted with safety restrictions and mitigations in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19 while ensuring Ronald Reagan returned to sea.

“Completing this availability is just another example of the ‘one team, one fight, keep the paperwork right’ motto, working to get the availabilities done on time,” said John Clyburn, SRF-JRMC’s carrier program manager. “It couldn’t have been accomplished without everyone’s support from all departments at SRF-JRMC, the PSNS project team and the CVN 76 crew.”

Ronald Reagan, the U.S. Navy’s only forward-deployed carrier and the flagship of Carrier Strike Group 5, provides support and security within the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations and upholds maritime interests of its allies to prevent conflict in the Indo-Pacific region.

SRF-JRMC’s mission is to keep the U.S. 7th Fleet operationally ready by using advanced industrial techniques to maintain, modernize and repair 21 forward-deployed naval forces ships homeported in Yokosuka and Sasebo.
