Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division hosted a speed mentoring event Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2025, to connect employees with mentors and strengthen professional networks across the command.
Speed mentoring is a fast-paced, structured event where mentees rotate among mentors to exchange advice, ask questions and build relationships. Each conversation is timed, giving participants an opportunity to “start” discussions and gain perspective on career growth and workplace challenges.
Mentorship, as described by the event, is about sharing knowledge and experience to help others succeed. These sessions give the workforce the chance to engage, learn, and build lasting professional connections.
Mentorship has long been recognized as a valuable tool in professional development. Research shows that effective mentoring leads to better career outcomes, higher workplace engagement, and improved employee retention. Mentoring benefits both mentees and mentors, often increasing job satisfaction and commitment to the organization.
At Carderock, mentorship takes many forms, including one-on-one, group, and virtual mentoring, as well as reverse mentoring, where junior employees share their perspectives with senior leaders. Employees can find mentors based on their specific job, department, or other preferences.
The command also operates the Peer Mentoring Network (PMN), which pairs new professionals with peer mentors to help them integrate into the workforce and local community during their first three months of employment.
“Signing up for the mentor program can assist in giving you an outlook on your new career, helping you plan a career path and provide you with resources, support and a mentor to help guide you along,” said Ta’lor Baker, program manager for Mentoring and the Advanced Leadership Program.
Mentoring not only provides career advice but also builds confidence, helping individuals navigate challenges, and making sure new professionals feel connected from the start.
Mentoring can also be used for personal reasons, like learning how to navigate a demanding role while finding a good work life balance.
By offering opportunities like speed mentoring, Carderock continues to emphasize the importance of developing talent, fostering a welcoming environment, and strengthening the organization through shared learning.
