CRANE, Ind. – A Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (NSWC Crane) employee was awarded for his contributions to the Silent Swarm Experimentation event held in Alpena, Michigan.

James Hornef was awarded the Civilian Service Achievement Medal (CSAM), which is the fifth highest honorary award within the Department of the Navy, for his work as the modeling and simulation engineer and Vignette Development Lead for the Silent Swarm Team. In his role as the modeling and simulation engineer, Hornef digitized the experimentation environment in the National All Domain Warfighting Center, as well as, digitizing a collection of low technology readiness level initiatives. This led to better accuracy when it came to planning which in turn led to a perfect execution during live experimentation. For his role as Vignette Development Lead, Hornef was the principal point for the technology initiatives and their placement in the experimentation environment.

Upon receiving this award, Hornef stated that he was honored to be recognized for something he is so passionate about.

“It was a great honor to be recognized for my contributions to the success of the Silent Swarm Experimentation event,” said Hornef.  “I am very fortunate to be a small part of an effort I am extremely passionate about and to be a part of an amazing team of like-minded individuals. I hope to continue supporting this effort, and others like it, as well as push the status quo on the rapid development of capabilities and technologies to support the warfighter.”

According to his citation letter Hornef “created an incredibly valuable experimentation event for technology initiatives and government stakeholders through the force of his leadership and his natural technical ability.”
