By Emily Gray, NSWC Crane Corporate Communications

CRANE, Ind. – A Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (NSWC Crane) employee was awarded for his outstanding work in radar technology for the Department of Defense (DOD).

K. Bryan Mitsdarffer received the Meritorious Civilian Service Award, the third highest honorary award in the Navy, due to his work as the Chief Engineer for Microwave Devices at NSWC Crane. In this role, Mitsdarffer shares his expertise for DOD-level Diminishing Manufacturing Sources and Material Sources, monitors the major microwave component manufacturers and suppliers, and facilitates coordination between the DOD and U.S. Government Agencies that use microwave components. Mitsdarffer also has over 30 years of experience as an expert in vacuum electronic devices (VEDs).

Upon receiving his award, Mitsdarffer stated that he was grateful for the support from his co-workers and supervisors.

“I am very appreciative for my co-workers and supervisors who supported my nomination for this award. I have been privileged to work with many talented and capable people throughout my career. I feel that all of the good work that has been completed and referenced in the award nomination was not done alone, but with a talented group of people. Their efforts helped lead to all the success I have experienced in my career,” said Mitsdarffer.

Over the years, Mitsdarffer has also worked with the Defense Industrial Base, currently chairs the World Wide Microwave Tube Manufacturers and Sub-Vendors Working Group, and routinely advises officials, such as the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Assistant Secretary of the Navy, and Naval Sea Systems Command Office of Counsel “to generate formal letters of end use to enable procurement of materials from foreign suppliers,” according to his nomination letter.

Mitsdarffer previously won the Meritorious Civilian Service Award in May 1997.
