John C. Mickey Award for Collaboration
The “CVN 78 Full Ship Shock Trial Team” was awarded the John C. Mickey Award for Collaboration for tremendous collaboration between the Carderock, Crane, Dahlgren, Keyport, Philadelphia, and Port Hueneme Warfare Center Divisions resulting in the successful execution of three underwater explosive shock tests on USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78). The team’s collective effort efficiently and effectively met test objectives within environmental and safety requirements during this complex and high visibility Test and Evaluation event. NSWCPD awardees included Sarah Collins, Jared Cope, Rahul George, Robert High, Michael Liberati, Daniel Moran, Phil Pascetta, Andrew Saturno, James Winward and Pat Wraga.
For exemplary collaboration between the Naval Sea Logistics Center, as well as the Keyport and Philadelphia Divisions, the “AN/BRA-6 Antenna Push to the Fleet Team” was also awarded the John C. Mickey Award for Collaboration for delivering an AN/BRA-6B Antenna within a two-week window to support USS Pasadena’s mission requirement. The team’s efforts achieved an 85 percent reduction in the schedule while meeting a critical fleet need. NSWCPD awardees included Christopher Faith, Kevin Mendala, Matthew J. Smith and Brandon Weiss.
For successful collaboration across the Carderock, Indian Head, Newport, Panama City, and Philadelphia Divisions the “Barracuda Team” was also awarded the John C. Mickey Award for Collaboration in recognition of its efforts to close out the Barracuda System Requirements Review and System Functional Review, achieve successful planning and execution of the Barracuda Support Equipment Preliminary Design Review, complete submission and incorporation of a Barracuda Engineering Change Proposal for lighting protection requirements, and address Data-at-Rest cybersecurity requirements to attain an Authority-to-Operate into system design/development, in preparation for the Barracuda Critical Design Review. Tyler Moak was the NSWCPD awardee.
In addition, the “Precise Integrated Navigation System In-Service Engineering Agent Team” received the John C. Mickey Award for Collaboration for substantial contributions in the execution of a full software and hardware installation. With members from the Panama City, Philadelphia, and Port Hueneme Divisions, this team embodied the One Team mantra throughout the installation, which resulted in unprecedented collaborative efforts. NSWCPD awardees were Shawn Anderson, Randy Justice and William Long.
Knowledge Sharing Award
The “Research Commons Team” won the Knowledge Sharing Award for their innovative digital library that provides knowledge management resources and tools to more than 4,000 researchers across the Department of the Navy and Department of Defense. Their work on this team expands access to essential research and information while avoiding duplication of efforts and resources through a shared subscription model that saved over $6 million across the participating commands. NSWCPD awardees included ReLinda Fagan, Scott Harris, Dr. Eugene Golda, and Dr. Stephen Mastro.
Technical Support Services Award
NSWCPD’s Nolan LaFountain was awarded the Technical Support Services Award for proactively demonstrating the ability to understand the technical and logistical aspects of the amphibious ship diesel program and determining that a time-based life cycle maintenance philosophy would be superior to the existing hours-based maintenance philosophy. His project engineering and coordination abilities resulted in a 50 percent reduction in the LSD 41/49 Ship Service Diesel Generator class provisioning task timeline, which accelerated the decline of growth work and advanced the on-time delivery of parts for future LSD 41/49 maintenance availabilities.
Daniel Lin from NSWCPD also received the Technical Support Services Award for his unwavering support of the troubleshooting and repair efforts for problems associated with the cooling/backup pump for the waterjet system on Littoral Combat Ship 6 and subsequent numbered hulls. He successfully led numerous process improvement initiatives, including the development of the Cooling Pump Planned Maintenance System card, saving roughly $250,000 per fiscal year while increasing the availability of the waterjet system.
NSWCPD employs approximately 2,800 civilian engineers, scientists, technicians, and support personnel. The NSWCPD team does the research and development, test and evaluation, acquisition support, and in-service and logistics engineering for the non-nuclear machinery, ship machinery systems, and related equipment and material for Navy surface ships and submarines. NSWCPD is also the lead organization providing cybersecurity for all ship systems.
