NSWC Panama City Division earns NAVSEA Awards excellence

By Jeremy Roman, NSWC PCD Public Affairs

Fourteen employees, including one individual and one team from Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division (NSWC PCD), earned Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA)  Excellence Awards for Fiscal Year 2021 (FY21).

These NAVSEA Excellence Awards highlight the One Team Warfare Center contributions aimed to deliver combat power, transform digital capability, and build a team to compete and win. Representing the Navy Lab:

Angela Taylor, NSWC PCD E Department Expeditionary Systems Division administrative assistant, earned the Excellence in Command Support Award.

Taylor is also the admin for three of its four branches. She is responsible for the multiple daily administrative details while solving both small and large problems for approximately 90 government employees and 40 contractors. Taylor pays attention, she takes time to listen, she cares, and she acts.

One example of Taylor’s attentiveness is when she noticed a coworker had not shown up to work, potentially saving their life. She and a colleague, Rebecca Crowder, decided to drive to the employee’s home for a health check and discovered the employee was trapped under a piece of furniture yelling for help. Taylor crawled through an unlocked kitchen window to assist and called emergency services. Rather than thinking a coworker just took the day off last-minute on a Friday, Taylor cared enough to check-up and make sure. According to the physician’s remarks, Taylor’s actions ultimately prevented significant physical harm or even death.

The Mine Countermeasures (MCM) Mission Package (MP) Tactics and Analysis (T&A) Team earned the Excellence in Operations Research/Systems Analysis Award.

Team members Jennifer Conner, Sunny Barton, Justin DeHerder, Dr. Emily Dempsey, Andrey Dyshko, Christine Ingram, Jennifer Jackson, Jean-Francios Kamath, Regina Kettering, Alesia McNutt, Jennifer Powell, Shelby Scotese and Michael Thompson are changing how the Fleet will execute MCM operations. Through dedication and countless hours, they have provided quality MCM products for the Fleet, and critical collaboration within both NSWC PCD and external organizations.

The MCM MP T&A Team provides critical expertise across many functional areas to develop future MCM capabilities for the Fleet, including test design and software development. They routinely execute multifaceted MCM analyses to aide in new system of systems development and tactics while informing design improvement decisions with Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) Mission Modules (PMS 420). Additionally, they provided important design of experiment, tactical expertise, and testing for LCS. This new doctrine supports LCS MCM MP deployments for current certified capability and is vital to the success of MCM MP Initial Operational Test and Evaluation.

NSWC PCD Commanding Officer Capt. David Back recognizes how the command’s personnel have significant impact to the lives of others, in and outside of the Fleet.

“The dedication and contributions made by Angela and the MCM MP Tactics and Analysis Team have had a substantial impact to the success of NAVSEA’s mission to expand the advantage,” said Back. “Their efforts directly impact our ability to shape the future of littoral battlespace operations. Whether it’s saving lives through the further development of autonomous advancement or feeling the need to do a welfare check on a coworker, I’m extremely proud of them and what they do to take care of every one of our warfighters.”
