Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (NSWC Crane) Midwest Tech Bridge (MTB) and Indiana Innovation Institute (IN3) are partnering on a new cyber physical systems laboratory in WestGate@Crane Technology Park in Odon, Indiana. An in-person ribbon-cutting event will take place Tuesday, July 27.
MTB is part of NavalX, which serves the Navy and Marine Corps as an innovation and agility cell that supports and connects initiatives across the Department of Defense (DoD). Tech Bridges are NavalX entities scaled across the world. Tech Bridges bring together organizations, local industry, academia, small business, and other government entities to accelerate results and solutions to the Department of the Navy.
The CyPhy Lab is the MTB’s first laboratory. Anne Fields, the MTB Director, says this is an exciting opportunity to work with a wide variety of individuals and organizations, including those who have not worked with the DoD.
“We are thrilled to open this innovation space so that entrepreneurs, technical experts, researchers, and more can come together to work on difficult challenges the warfighter faces,” says Anne Fields. “As the MTB’s first Laboratory, there are unique collaborative opportunities that can be pursued. The equipment provides new capability for our internal technical experts as well as external collaborative partners. We are excited for people to get in the space and collaborate on projects. ”
The new Cyber Physical Systems Laboratory (CyPhy Lab) provides industry, government, and academia a collaboration space.
Richard Leonard, the Director of Federal Programs at IN3, says the CyPhy Lab will include state-of-the-art equipment and expertise to provide opportunities for participants to turn their ideas into working prototypes.
“The technology ecosystem supporting NSWC Crane is going to be significantly enhanced through this investment by the Navy and IN3,” says Leonard. “The CyPhy Lab is a unique in providing an ‘outside the gate’ location for technical collaborations between government and industry with supporting equipment and staff.”
The CyPhy Lab includes capability for electronics test and integration, sensor integration, additive manufacturing and machine shop, and modeling and simulation. The lab is almost 2,000-square-foot and has a collaborative conference area both groups and individuals can use. The facility is also connected to I-Light, a high-speed fiber optic network that links state, national, and international research and education communities and powers high-quality video connections and the ability to exchange large data files.
Equipment in the new lab was supported through a grant from the Office of Naval Research. The effort is supported by NSWC Crane, NavalX Midwest Tech Bridge, and Indiana Innovation Institute (IN3). Indiana University provided the I-Light network.
