By NSWC Indian Head Division Public Affairs

Dr. Phillip J. Cole recently joined Naval Surface Warfare Center Indian Head Division (NSWC IHD) as the new Energetics Manufacturing (M) Department head. His background includes research and development; global security testing and evaluation (T&E); chemical engineering; materials science and engineering; nuclear technology, and combat weapons.

Dr. Cole comes to the command from the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he was the senior technical director and senior program manager of the Enabling Capabilities Department, Research and Development Directorate. Prior to this role, he led global security T&E at the Nevada National Security Site as a member of the management team of National Security Technologies, LLC. His previous positions include serving as a member of DTRA’s Nuclear Technologies Department and Sandia National Laboratories technical staff.

Dr. Cole earned Bachelor of Science degrees in chemical engineering, and materials science and engineering from Northwestern University, and a doctorate in materials science and engineering from the University of Minnesota.

“Dr. Phillip Cole came on board a few weeks ago and he is already stepping into the breach and helping to address the things that need to be addressed from a leadership position within M Department,” said NSWC IHD Technical Director Ashley Johnson in a recent livestream to the workforce.
