National Geographic’s Drain the Oceans featured one of Carderock’s engineers, Dr. Ken Nahshon, who works in the Hull Response and Protection Branch. This particular episode looks at the “Secrets of New York City,” and one of those was the sinking of the USS San Diego in 1918 off the coast of Long Island by a mine or a torpedo. Nahshon and other Carderock researchers, using Naval Innovative Science and Engineering (NISE)/Section 219 funds, provided engineering support to the Navy History and Heritage Command to help determine the cause of San Diego’s sinking.
