(June 13, 2017) - A Science, Mathematics & Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholar holds an electromagnetic railgun projectile while two fellow SMART scholars flank her on the right and left as they stand in front of the U.S. Navy's electromagnetic railgun prototype launcher. Representatives from the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) and Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) are also pictured. Navy scientists and engineers briefed the college students on electromagnetic launchers, hypervelocity projectiles, directed energy weapons, and chemical, biological, and radiological detection and defense technologies during their NSWCDD tour. The Missile Defense Agency sponsored the college students who are among those pursuing a degree in, or closely related to, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines through the Department of Defense SMART Scholar program. Students selected for SMART Scholarships are offered internships and a stepping stone to future civilian job opportunities in the federal government.
