The department provides prototype passive acoustic tools for the detection, classification, localization and density estimation of marine mammals

It is responsible for conducting all Navy acoustic effects modeling as part of ongoing environmental planning, permitting and consultation requirements for Navy training and testing at sea. Other responsibilities include:

• Center of excellence for all Navy acoustic effects modeling
• Conduct range monitoring software development​
• Provide continuous (24/7) marine mammal monitoring on Navy ranges
• Support USFF, CPF, NAVSEA, NAVAIR, ONR, NIWC, US Coast Guard, USMC
