By Brittny Odoms, NSWC Carderock Division Public Affairs | June 8, 2026
For David Bernard, a mechanical engineer at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division, engineering has always been about solving problems, supporting the fleet and helping others discover their own potential. Bernard,...

Structural engineer Ed Davis instructs students during a degraded structures course at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division. The course provides waterfront engineers with the analytical tools needed to assess structural damage, evaluate risk, and support maintenance and sustainment decisions across the fleet. Davis helped develop the course and served as one of its primary instructors until his retirement in 2025. (Photo courtesy of M. Meares)
From Design to Sustainment: Carderock Engineers Share Structural Expertise
By Alisha Tyer, NSWC Carderock Division Public Affairs | June 3, 2026
When engineers discover structural damage or corrosion on a ship, they must determine whether the vessel can safely operate until it can be repaired. To support those decisions across the fleet, engineers at Naval Surface...

BALTIMORE (May 20, 2026) – Jacquelyn Southerland, a member of the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division’s Strategic Education Outreach Team, guides SEED School of Baltimore students through a hands-on coding exercise using an Ozobot Ari robot during a Tech Day event. The compact, programmable robot helps make computer science engaging, supporting the Carderock team's broader mission to spark curiosity in 158 middle school students and inspire the next generation of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professionals. Carderock Outreach Team Sparks STEM Curiosity at SEED School Tech Day
By Aaron Thomas, NSWC Carderock Public Affairs | June 1, 2026
The future of the U.S. Navy fleet depends on the innovators of tomorrow. This reality drove an immersive educational mission at the SEED School of Maryland on May 20, an event organized by the school where Naval Surface...

James Calverley, a senior mechanical engineer at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PSNS & IMF), demonstrates the auto-hydrolance condenser cleaning robot to Rear Adm. Jason Lloyd, then-chief engineer (CHENG) of Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) 05. The robot decreases condenser cleaning operations by weeks, removes human workers from exposure to dangerous high-pressure water jets, and improves the quality and consistency of condenser tube cleaning. Through the Discovery Team and the Engineering Intervention Board, this innovation from PSNS & IMF was successfully expanded to Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) and is now being adapted for submarine maintenance.
