During the visit, Owens and Cramer met with senior leadership from PHNSY & IMF to assess progress on the Navy’s Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program and tour the shipyard’s dry dock areas that will be modernized beginning in 2023. The first modernization action proposes to construct and operate a new graving dry dock and waterfront production facility to support current and future classes of the nation’s nuclear-powered submarines.

Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) held a groundbreaking for its new production training facility July 1, which will consolidate training currently spread across 26 different NNSY locations and eight departments into a single 157,000 square-foot, $64.7 million dollar facility. NUWC Division Newport engineer earns DON Superior Civilian Service Award

William “Dave” Shallcross, an engineer with the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport’s Customer Advocate and Field Team Office, who currently detailed to the Office of Naval Research-Global, recently was awarded the Department of the Navy Superior Civilian Service Award, the second highest DON civilian award, for his sustained exceptional service as science advisor and special assistant to the Commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet, from 2022 through 2025.
