During the visit, Owens and Cramer met with senior leadership from PHNSY & IMF to assess progress on the Navy’s Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program and tour the shipyard’s dry dock areas that will be modernized beginning in 2023. The first modernization action proposes to construct and operate a new graving dry dock and waterfront production facility to support current and future classes of the nation’s nuclear-powered submarines.

Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) held a groundbreaking for its new production training facility July 1, which will consolidate training currently spread across 26 different NNSY locations and eight departments into a single 157,000 square-foot, $64.7 million dollar facility. NUWC Division Newport employees, 250 children share in STEM demonstrations as part of Bring a Child to Work Day

Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport Commanding Officer Capt. Chad Hennings welcomes attendees to Bring a Child to Work Day ahead of morning colors held on the campus on June 27, 2025. Roughly 250 youngsters, ages 9 to 17, and 150 parents and guardians participated in the day-long event designed to introduce family members of the employees to the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) work conducted at the warfare center.
