During the visit, Owens and Cramer met with senior leadership from PHNSY & IMF to assess progress on the Navy’s Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program and tour the shipyard’s dry dock areas that will be modernized beginning in 2023. Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) held a groundbreaking for its new production training facility July 1, which will consolidate training currently spread across 26 different NNSY locations and eight departments into a single 157,000 square-foot, $64.7 million dollar facility. Talking Shop: Celebrating NNSY’s Pipefitter Shop (Shop 56)

Norfolk Naval Shipyard’s Pipefitter Shop (Shop 56) Helper-to-Worker Pipefitter Benjamin Roach has been at the shipyard for almost two years. He is currently enrolled in the Helper-to-Worker Program, which is a three-year program to learn a specific trade. Before joining NNSY, Roach served in the U.S. Marine Corps for four years. “My primary job in the Marines was finances,” said Roach. “I knew this wasn’t for me, so after my enlistment was over, I joined the Helper-to-Worker Program to learn a trade and to work with my hands and I have no regrets in doing so.”
