During the visit, Owens and Cramer met with senior leadership from PHNSY & IMF to assess progress on the Navy’s Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program and tour the shipyard’s dry dock areas that will be modernized beginning in 2023. One of World’s Largest Water Pressure Tunnels Provides Unique Opportunity for Researchers at Carderock

Memphis Site Director Matt Brantz explains the history of Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division’s Large Cavitation Channel to visiting researchers and scientists participating in the Cavitation-Resistant Materials and Coating workshop on July 25, 2024, in Memphis, Tenn. The group had the opportunity to watch live erosion testing inside the site’s advanced high-speed, variable-pressure water tunnel. Carderock is one of the Navy’s pre-eminent research and development facilities that specializes in critical ship design components headquartered in West Bethesda, Md. The Carderock Division supports small-scale model testing and evaluation of next-generation surface ships and underwater vessels.
