Sheetmetal Shop 17 workers Pearl Sanchez and Mary St. Sauveur solder pipe, sometime between 1942 and 1945. In 1942, there were 80 women working in the shipyard’s industrial area. By December 1944, there were 4,266. They personified the “Rosie the Riveter” cultural icon of the era. (U.S. Navy photo)
