During the visit, Owens and Cramer met with senior leadership from PHNSY & IMF to assess progress on the Navy’s Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program and tour the shipyard’s dry dock areas that will be modernized beginning in 2023. The first modernization action proposes to construct and operate a new graving dry dock and waterfront production facility to support current and future classes of the nation’s nuclear-powered submarines.

Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) held a groundbreaking for its new production training facility July 1, which will consolidate training currently spread across 26 different NNSY locations and eight departments into a single 157,000 square-foot, $64.7 million dollar facility. PSNS & IMF veterans reflect on how military service informs their work at the shipyard

Leslie Churchill, U.S. Navy, 24 years Marine Machinery Supervisor, Shop 38, Marine Machinist “I joined the Navy because I had a strong desire to serve and to go to college. My great uncle, father, wife and son all served. This legacy is important to me and has helped instill a sense of pride in workmanship and ownership in every aspect of my work. My prior service helps me lead by example and demonstrate the importance of our shipyard’s work and what it represents. My prior service helps me connect to the mission by never giving up, even when things get tough. As a Seabee our motto is “Can Do.” Simply put we don’t give up till the mission is complete.”
