During the visit, Owens and Cramer met with senior leadership from PHNSY & IMF to assess progress on the Navy’s Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program and tour the shipyard’s dry dock areas that will be modernized beginning in 2023. Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) held a groundbreaking for its new production training facility July 1, which will consolidate training currently spread across 26 different NNSY locations and eight departments into a single 157,000 square-foot, $64.7 million dollar facility. Summer programs at NUWC Division Newport teach students about engineering and teamwork

Undersea Technology Apprentice Program participants Zachary Quintal (from left) of St. George’s School in Middletown, Rhode Island; Anthony DaSilva, a home-schooled student; Jake Greene of Bishop Hendricken High School in Warwick, Rhode Island; and Sofia DiBiasio of Narragansett High School in Rhode Island, test their remotely operated underwater vehicle before a competition held at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport on Aug. 16, 2023. Each summer, Division Newport hosts two, three-week sessions of the Undersea Technology Apprentice Program, where students work alongside scientists and engineers to learn hands-on STEM skills.
