During the visit, Owens and Cramer met with senior leadership from PHNSY & IMF to assess progress on the Navy’s Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program and tour the shipyard’s dry dock areas that will be modernized beginning in 2023. The first modernization action proposes to construct and operate a new graving dry dock and waterfront production facility to support current and future classes of the nation’s nuclear-powered submarines.

Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) held a groundbreaking for its new production training facility July 1, which will consolidate training currently spread across 26 different NNSY locations and eight departments into a single 157,000 square-foot, $64.7 million dollar facility. PHNSY at Onizuka Day of Exploration

Kawamura and Massingil were among a handful of volunteers representing the shipyard at the event as they led activities such as a demonstration of a 3D dry dock simulator, building loads to be lifted with a crane, and trying on diving gear with members of the dive shop. Known as Hawaii's largest STEM event, Onizuka Day of Exploration featured over 100 hands-on activities, workshops, and classes for all ages to enjoy; with a special focus on Hawaiian culture, sustainability, and career development.
