During the visit, Owens and Cramer met with senior leadership from PHNSY & IMF to assess progress on the Navy’s Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program and tour the shipyard’s dry dock areas that will be modernized beginning in 2023. The first modernization action proposes to construct and operate a new graving dry dock and waterfront production facility to support current and future classes of the nation’s nuclear-powered submarines.

Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) held a groundbreaking for its new production training facility July 1, which will consolidate training currently spread across 26 different NNSY locations and eight departments into a single 157,000 square-foot, $64.7 million dollar facility. Home team Masks

Motisola McKinnon, Competency Specialist with Command University at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility in Bremerton, Washington, hangs "Home Team" masks to dry after they were laundered. An April 5, 2020, mandate from then-Defense Secretary Mark Esper required anyone on Department of Defense property to use a protective facemask. Pre-cut, patterned materials and instructions were provided to volunteers who had access to a sewing machine and a pair of scissors in order to produce masks quickly and efficiently. More than 100 volunteers from the shipyard offered to help sew, including employees like McKinnon who were teleworking and joined the cause to assemble masks.
