SMART Scholars Visit Dahlgren - 21 Aug. 2017
DAHLGREN, Va. (Aug. 21, 2017) - Jim Green, a Potomac River Test Range safety expert, recounts the history of the Navy's 16 inch gun barrel for Science, Mathematics & Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholars during their tour of the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) main range. Green explained the inspection process for the 16 inch barrel in the 1940s, comparing it to today's inspections for the 5 inch and 76mm rifled barrel. "The Navy conducts a rigorous inspection process, then live fire testing to ensure the Fleet gun barrels are safe to be fired from a ship," he told the SMART scholars. The Missile Defense Agency sponsored the college students who are among those pursuing a degree in, or closely related to, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines through the Department of Defense SMART Scholar program. Students selected for SMART Scholarships are offered internships and a stepping stone to future civilian job opportunities in the federal government.
