Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) held a groundbreaking for its new production training facility July 1, which will consolidate training currently spread across 26 different NNSY locations and eight departments into a single 157,000 square-foot, $64.7 million dollar facility. "The firing directors and lookouts are in constant communication with range control, gun captains, test personnel and range boats during testing events for guns, lasers, and UAV's (unmanned aerial vehicles)," Green told the college students. "They are also in constant communication with our remote site called the Environmental Explosive Area where we do drop test, cook off test, shake and vibration, and many more types of tests." The Missile Defense Agency sponsored the college students who are among those pursuing a degree in, or closely related to, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines through the Department of Defense SMART Scholar program. Students selected for SMART Scholarships are offered internships and a stepping stone to future civilian job opportunities in the federal government.
