Carderock supports energy innovation with Wave Energy Prize tests

The Wave Energy Prize competition has started its final phase of testing at the Naval Surface Warfare Center,
Carderock Division, hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy. The final phase is taking place at the Maneuvering
and Seakeeping Basin in West Bethesda, Md. Nine teams were selected to build a one-twentieth scale model
of their Wave Energy Converter (WEC) device to showcase their performance and compete to win $1.5 million.

Michael Yeh, left, and Gary Lunt, NSWC Corona engineers, demonstrate their patent-pending Cycloptic Scoring System (CYCLOPSS) project. Through the Naval Innovative Science and Engineering (NISE) program, Yeh and Lunt are developing a low-cost, lightweight weapons impact scoring system (WISS), utilizing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), for use in remote locations or at sea.
