The Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) recently recognized Naval Surface Warfare Center, Philadelphia Division (NSWCPD) with a 2022 SECNAV Energy Award in the Technology Development & Acquisition category for its High Efficiency Super-Capacity (HES-C) chiller, seen here on USS John P. Murtha (LPD 26). The HES-C chiller is currently being fielded on all new construction amphibious transport dock, destroyer (DDG), and Constellation-class frigate hulls. NSWC Crane leads Office of Naval Research effort to enhance electro-optics, infrared technology at sea
May 30, 2023 — NSWC Crane hosted a milestone workshop for a new program dedicated to improved maritime electro-optic and infrared (EO/IR) technology. The workshop hosted about 40 participants from across industry, government, and several federally-funded laboratories meeting in-person for the first time in Bloomington, Indiana and at NSWC Crane on May 10-11. The Office of Naval Research (ONR) program, a new Future Naval Capability (FNC) called Multi-SpecTral High Resolution Imaging and Targeting Sensor (MUST-HITS), addresses research challenges and opportunities in high resolution imaging and integration technology areas. NSWC Crane leads and is contributing expertise to this science and technology (S&T) effort which aims to rapidly enhance advanced maritime EO/IR technology in order to improve visibility of a wide variety of targets at once. Dr. Benjamin Conley, the Senior Scientist and Technology Manager (SSTM) for EO/IR sensing, is also the ONR Program Officer for this effort. “It was great having the entire MUST-HITS team together in the same room,” said Dr. Conley. “With MUST-HITS, we are aiming to improve warfighter visibility and situational awareness for long-range and real-time targeting at sea. The program will do this through an unprecedented infrared resolution sensor using a digital back-end to see multiple items at the same time at range. MUST-HITS also will provide baseline capability for upgrades in the future without major hardware and sensor replacements due to the digital nature of the sensor.”... MORE

Carderock Collaborates with USMC on Tactical Fabrication Additive Manufacturing Kit
May 30, 2023 — In 2022, Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), Carderock Division employees in the Platform Integrity Department and NSWC Crane Division collaborated to provide Expeditionary Fabrication (XFAB) systems to various U.S. Marine Corps bases throughout the world. Refueling Complex Overhaul Completed on USS George Washington (CVN 73)
May 25, 2023 — NEWPORT NEWS, VA – USS George Washington (CVN 73), the nation’s sixth Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, ushered in the second half of its service life on May 25, when it completed its refueling complex overhaul (RCOH) at Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS), in Norfolk, Virginia. Following four days of demanding sea trials off the East Coast, NNS redelivered a refueled George Washington to the U.S. Navy complete with modernized combat systems and infrastructure to support the Navy’s air wing of the future...
