Command Master Chief Stephanie D. Canteen, a native of Bronx, New York, enlisted in the Navy in March 1995. After completion of Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill., she attended Culinary ‘A’ School at Naval Training Center San Diego, where she graduated at the top of her class with accelerated Third Class Petty Officer Advancement.

Master Chief Canteen’s tours have included Naval Security Group Activity (NSGA), Winter Harbor, Maine, serving as Galley Watch Captain and Barracks Petty Officer from 1995 to 1997. She served at Naval Air Station (NAS) Jacksonville at Patrol and Reconnaissance Squadron (VP) 45, quickly completing her Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist (EAWS) qualifications. She served with VP-45 from 1997-2001. She transferred to Combined Bachelor Quarters, Jacksonville, Fla. as Building Manager from 2001 to 2005.

Canteen received her first sea tour onboard USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) at Naval Station Norfolk (NSN), Norfolk, Va. from 2005-2009. In her first year there, she qualified for the Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist (ESWS) pin and served as the Leading Petty Officer for all food service areas.

She reported to NAS Jacksonville Pre-Trial Confinement Facility and completed a three-year tour from 2009-2012 and was promoted to Chief Petty Officer. During her time there, she served as Brig Guard, Brig Counselor and Operations Officer. In 2012, she reported to the USS Whidbey Island (LSD 41) homeported at NSN where she served from 2012-2015 as the Supply Department Leading Chief Petty Officer (DLCPO) and Leading Culinary Specialist.

She was attached to Afloat Training Group (ATG), Mayport, Fla. from 2015 – 2018. Her positions included Culinary Specialist Training Team Lead and DLCPO. During her tour at ATG, she was promoted to Master Chief Petty Officer. In February 2019, Canteen reported onboard USS Harry S Truman (CVN 75) and served as the Food Service Department Leading Culinary Specialist. In March 2019, Master Chief Canteen was selected into the Command Master Chief (CMC) Program and attended the Command Master Chief/Chief of the Boat course in January 2020. 

Her first CMC tour was with the world-famous Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 103 at NAS Oceana in Virginia Beach, Va. from 2020 – 2022. She is currently serving as the first female Command Master Chief in a Senior Enlisted Advisor position at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

Command Master Chief Canteen attended the Senior Enlisted Academy (SEA) and is a graduate of class #186, (Gold), the last six-week legacy class of SEA. She completed instructor course in September 2015, Qualified Master Training Specialist and Afloat Training Specialist and completed Associate of Arts degree in Supervision and Management at Coastline Community College.  Canteen’s decorations includes: (1) Meritorious service Medal (4) Navy Commendation Medal (5) Navy Achievement Medal and (9) Good Conduct Award.
