Welding Engineering Division
Code 138

Welding Engineering at Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) is divided into three branches.

Radiological Engineering Division
Principally work on systems directly related to the support of reactor and its primary components

Non-Nuclear Welding Engineers
Principally work on ship hulls, ship structures and all ship systems outside of the reactor

NDT Test Examiners & Engineering Branch
Work on nuclear and non-nuclear ship systems and are principally responsible for providing engineering services for nondestructive testing (NDT) methods including:

  • Visual & Dimensional Inspection (VT)
  • Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT)
  • Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
  • Radiography (RT)
  • Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)
  • Eddy Current Testing (ET)
  • Alloy Identity

Although each branch supports different systems, all branches provide services which include but are not limited to:

  • Codes & Standards Interpretation
  • Quality Assurance
  • Materials Selection
  • Process Selection
  • Repair Procedure Developments
  • Pre-production Prototyping
  • Procedure Development
  • Design Review
  • Process Assessment
  • Process Improvement
  • Testing & Evaluation
  • Failure Analysis
