CRANE, Ind. – Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (NSWC Crane) held its annual Inventor Recognition Event in conjunction with its In-House Laboratory Independent Research (ILIR) and Independent Applied Research (IAR) Fiscal Year 2023 (FY23) Program Review on November 28. Fifty people attended the event that took place at the High-Velocity (HiVe) Innovation Center at NSWC Crane, where 35 inventors were recognized, and 13 ILIR/IAR programs were displayed.
Each year, these events provide employees the opportunity to meet with principal investigators and learn about the programs investing in research. Maria Duran, the Technology Transfer (T2) Director at NSWC Crane, said the Inventor Recognition Event recognizes those employees who were granted a patent in FY23.
“It was fantastic being able to celebrate NSWC Crane’s inventors for 2023,” said Duran. “We are so grateful that so many from NSWC Crane’s leadership team and workforce joined us in honoring the inventors and took the time to learn more about their technological advancements on display.”
The FY23 Program Review is an event recognizing NSWC Crane’s basic and applied research efforts funded by the ILIR and IAR programs. The event celebrates current efforts while encouraging employees to pursue innovative academic research.
“This event marked the inaugural year of participation for NSWC Crane within the Department of the Navy ILIR and IAR Programs, reserved only for those activities that are capable of executing high-quality basic research to lead to discovery and invention,” says Dr. Jonathan Dilger, the Director of Research and Command Chief Scientist at NSWC Crane. “Inclusion in this program is truly a testament to the growth and transformation of our organization as a federal laboratory.”
NSWC Crane executed more than one million dollars in 13 ILIR and IAR projects, including four as part of the Ph.D. Fellowship Program. During the inaugural year for the program, three patents were disclosed and two were filed, eight peer-reviewed articles were published in literature, and 18 conference presentations were made externally.
The T2 annual recognition award honors up to three NSWC Crane employees who have been significant supporters of the patent and technology transfer program or who have made demonstrably productive use of T2 tools and mechanism to advance research goals and enhance support to the warfighter.
Three recipients received the annual T2 award:
- Dr. Greg Forcherio
- Dr. Robert Cooper
