Capt. JD Crinklaw visits San Diego Detachment for the first time as commander of PSNS & IMF

By Max Maxfield, PSNS & IMF Public Affairs

Capt. JD Crinklaw, commander, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility, visited the PSNS & IMF San Diego Detachment June 27-29, 2023, for the first time since taking command May 25.

According to Jeremy Miller, PSNS & IMF Detachment San Diego Director, Crinklaw and Cmdr. Brandon Johnson, PSNS & IMF executive officer, received a facility tour with Miller and Tanya Lalicker, site manager for PSNS & IMF San Diego Detachment, to learn about the detachment’s capabilities, upcoming projects, and ongoing upgrades to facilities and processes.

“I wanted Capt. Crinklaw to get to know the incredible and highly capable people who complete our mission of aircraft carrier repair and maintenance at PSNS & IMF San Diego Detachment,” Miller said. “Also, he was able to learn about the improvements in equipment and facilities that those highly capable people have come up with and are implementing.”

According to Miller, Crinklaw also toured USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), which is undergoing an availability, and helped the team celebrate their successes thus far as they approach the 50-percent review. He also toured Point Loma Submarine Base in anticipation of the upcoming CNO availability on USS Scranton (SSN 756), and visited the commodore of Submarine Squadron 11.

Crinklaw toured the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Point Loma Detachment and observed a Point Loma Radiological Emergency Response Organization drill.

Miller said the U.S. Navy's presence in the San Diego area is extensive, and having Crinklaw visit to see the work firsthand, and to meet some of the command’s area partners was invaluable.

“The waterfront at Naval Air Station North Island is a busy place with three home ported aircraft carriers – USS Carl Vinson (CNV 70), USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) and USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72),” Miller said. “The management of the work is enhanced by the relationships that we build with our Navy stakeholders in the South West Region.”

Crinklaw also helped recognize the accomplishments of some teams and individuals at the detachment. Recognized were Supervisor Bill Schoonmaker and his crew from Shop 31, Inside Machinist Shop; Supervisor Andrew Lerch and his crew from Shop 38, Marine Machinist Shop; and Austin Cunningham, a zone manager with Code 300N.84, Nuclear Production Department.

Miller said he looks forward to working with Crinklaw to continue the detachments missions of delivering ships on time, safely.

As commander of PSNS & IMF, Crinklaw also oversees operations at PSNS & IMF Everett Detachment, in Everett, Washington, which operates repair, planning, and business repair capabilities for surface combatants. PSNS & IMF also has a detachment in Yokosuka, Japan, which conducts maintenance on the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76).
